Shooting DV for Film
I’ve just received (and nearly read cover-to-cover) a very good book about Shooting Digital, by Marcus van Bamel of DVFilm. The book is a must-read useful thing for anyone shooting on digital video, especially if you’re using the DV format, and want to convert between PAL / NTSC, and or print to film in the future. It also explains and compares the many different digital video formats, explains the benefits and problems with interlacing / progressive fields, and a whole bunch else about the conversion processes between each format.
Although it does plug DVFilm’s software a little too much, this is always done in context and is genuinely honest about when it is / isn’t the best solution. They have two software products:
- DVFilm Maker, which converts interlaced video to film-look progressive scan format
- DVFilm Atlantis, which converts between PAL and NTSC format
If you’re working with the cheap and cheerful DV format on a budget MiniDV camera or similar, and want to avoid technical problems down the line when your microbudget PAL 50i short film gets transferred to NTSC broadcast format or on to 35mm film, then the book is well worth a read. It’s worth a read anyway if you’re new to DV, and get confused by the many different video format options in Final Cut Pro. The software looks good too.
